Give homework feedback with a clear next step
A learner should finish reading your feedback knowing what worked, what to change and whether another submission is expected.
Tutors reviewing homework between lessons. The checklist also works with assignments collected outside MomentDesk.

What you end up with
The review refers to the learner's actual work and gives one manageable next action.
What to do
Check the task and the actual submission
Read the original instructions, then open the submitted text and every relevant file. Confirm whose work and which attempt you are reviewing. If a file is missing or cannot be opened, ask for a readable copy before making a judgment about its contents.
Identify evidence of progress
Name one thing the learner did successfully and point to its location: a labelled diagram, a justified step or a clear paragraph. “Good work” alone does not tell the learner what to repeat. Compare with the task's stated goal rather than with another student's work.
Choose one or two useful changes
Describe the issue, where it appears and what the learner should do next. Example: “Your diagram labels are clear. In calculation 3, carry the unit through each line and check the final unit. Upload the corrected calculation.” Distinguish an error from missing evidence; ask a question when the reasoning is unclear.
Choose the outcome deliberately
Accept work when it meets the agreed goal. Return it for revision when you expect another attempt, and say exactly what to submit. In MomentDesk, acceptance closes submission; returning opens a new attempt while retaining earlier ones. A grade is optional when you select the no-grade review mode.
Check what the learner will read
Read the final comment once as the learner. It should contain a concrete action, the expected submission and a deadline with its time zone if needed. On the next attempt, compare the requested change with the new work. Do not mark a revision complete merely because another file arrived.
Good to know
- Reusable comment: “You did [specific success, location]. Please change [one issue, location] by [concrete action]. Submit [text/file] by [date, time, zone]. I will check [criterion].” Remove unused fields and replace every placeholder.
- Before sending: right learner and attempt · files readable · evidence named · next action clear · accept or revise · deadline unambiguous.
- An answer-key result can help you inspect a response. It does not replace your judgment about an open-ended explanation or the learner's next step.
Questions
Should every assignment receive a grade?
A grade is useful when it serves an agreed purpose. You can give a specific comment and a clear outcome without one; MomentDesk supports no-grade review.
What if I accepted the work too soon?
MomentDesk offers Undo acceptance to reopen an assignment. Explain the new request to the learner and check the review history before changing an earlier decision.
